Sir Walter Raleigh A pipe tobacco review

Sir Walter Raleigh (pouch)

A Woody Prince?

Let me get this out of the way first. I do not work for a tobacco company nor do I sell tobacco. Everyone above the age of 10 already knows that smoking is bad for you so don't start and if you already have then quit.

On to business.

My original review had to be updated and edited.  The original pouch I tried was from a store I never buy tobacco from, (and likely no one else does either), so the pouch was probably sitting on the shelf for a few years.    I didn't think much of it at the time.  Long story short someone sent me a tub of it and I found it far more pleasing than the pouch.  SWR has a nice woody taste.  It's not a weak tobacco and you can actually tell you are smoking something.  I find it woody and slightly nutty.  From time to time I get a hint of coffee as well.

Overall I consider SWR one of the better drug store blends out there.  I've paid over $15 for two ounces of the high end stuff I didn't like as well as SWR.  The only real problem with SWR is the burley bitters near the end.  Like most drug store blends this is mostly burley and such things are difficult to avoid.  It lights easily, burns well and I rarely have to relight.  I smoke this out of a cob to get the best flavors possible.

Do yourself a favor.  When you find a blend you like cellar it away.  Prices never seem to go down and you can save a bundle by getting it as cheap as you can now.    A new pipe tobacco tax lax is also being considered that would raise the price of a tub of SWR from $22 now to over $40 where I buy it.  I've now stored away nine tubs of this stuff and will get more.

A very solid 4 stars plus ****

Well, i'm not your anonamous donor but liked your hub very much. Had a great uncle who used to smoke a pipe all the time and even as a young girl I loved being close to him to smell the pipe smoke. I can still picture him setting in his chair and smoking his pipe. Thanks for bringing back a great memory.

nice review. I'd prefer smokeless cigarettes to these.

I love SWR ! I have it in the am w/ coffee every morning . I smoke it , many times , in a MM Legend w/ filter . I gravity fill the pipe and give a very light tamp and I'm good to go . I've found if tamped too much ... it'll get bitter on me also . Gravity and a light tamp ... no bitters :) . It is the perfect blend w/ coffee . It's good you are stocking up .... God forbid , down the road , this stuff costs a bunch .. you'll be set for a good long while !
